Porini Log has been an agent representing St Michel Print (StMP) thin paper books printing during 2004-2013 and during this time an idea for the possibility to expand the book production into printing the medical sector product information leaflets. The consultant carried out the product development activities together with the management and supervisory board of StMP following the project plan that has been approved by Tekes for funding. During the project a thorough analysis of the medical sector and its use of product information leaflets was carried out and new innovative product “booklet” was developed and test marketing has been carried out since.

Narrative Description of Project: 

In 2003 the European Union (EU) published its EU FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade) Action Plan. Central to this plan is negotiation and implementation of so-called Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPA), bilateral agreements between the EU and countries exporting timber products into the EU. VPAs intend to establish Legality Assurance Systems (LAS) to ensure timber destined for the EU markets is produced in accordance with the existing legislation of the FLEGT partner countries, reinforce ongoing forest governance related reform processes and offer technical and financial assistance in implementing relevant policy reforms supported by in-country multi stakeholder processes.

The government of Ghana and the European Union have signed the world’s first VPA on 20 November 2009. The Agreement aims at contributing to governance reforms of the forestry sector and sustainable forest management, realising the full economic value of forests and ensuring that the forest sector contributes to poverty alleviation. The VPA sets out that Ghana will establish a LAS to monitor, control and verify management and use of Ghana’s forest resources to ensure that all the harvesting, processing and other operations are legally carried out. The LAS applies to all sources of commercial timber and products processed and acquired in Ghana for the EU and non-EU markets, as well as all timber sold on the domestic market.The project is to provide the Ghanaian Timber Validation Department (TVD) with assistance in developing verification practices that are consistent with the principles set out in the VPA. Two main areas for development are 1. verification against the legality standard and 2. management and analysis of data entered into the WTS

Nara Prefecture retains a special place in the forestry of Japan, due to its high quality cedar and cypress forests, managed under a long rotation period, with the main focus on obtaining high quality wood for local craftsmen – a centuries old tradition.

The terrain is very challenging, and the solution currently employed includes helicopters, which are very expensive and with small productivity.

The consultant cooperated with Prolemn – the Association of Wood-Working Industry of Romania in building up the program and providing the venue for the event held in Bucharest, as well as inviting and securing the participation of representatives of major stakeholders from both the State and private sectors: forest owners and managers, largest wood harvesting and processing companies, as well as modern forestry equipment manufacturers and dealers in the country.

The EIB officials got the chance to learn first-hand about the Romanian forest sector’s current state of affairs,  its challenges and the opportunities for sizeable and meaningful investments. They presented the funding avenues that Romanian companies could tap into, the criteria to be met, and opened direct communication channels with the companies interested in growing their businesses.

Focusing on the “invisible” wood from our everyday life, and pinpointing that wood (through its components) is an ubiquitous  element present in more than 5,000 products, but that it usually goes unnoticed and therefore unappreciated at its true value.

Promoting wood-based bioeconomy concepts in Romania, during media events organised by PFBR and its local partners in Bucharest (October 2022) and Oradea (April 2023). Focusing on the “invisible” wood from our everyday life, and pinpointing that wood (through its components) is an ubiquitous  element present in more than 5,000 products, but that it usually goes unnoticed and therefore unappreciated at its true value.

Narrative Description of Project:

The main objective of the project was to produce a new and EU-aligned national strategy for forests, one to address the current socio-economic realities of Romania, and the goals for a green economy and biodiversity conservation et at European level.

The Consultant was responsible of coordinating one of the nine dedicated Working Groups that produced the National Strategy for Forests. The focus of the WG was on the wood balance and wood market of Romania, a subject left untouched by decision makers in the past 15 years, reason for lack of predictability, as well as abuses that culminated with an EU infringement on illegal logging allegations. The Consultant was in charge with the component of the WG (a balanced one, bringing at the same table top industrial operators, NGOs, consultants, academia, forest owners and managers), conducting the internal work, as well as involving over 30 other experts from the field in questionnaires and debates meant to bring clarity over the topic at hand. The end result of the work was the approval of the WG Report and of the Strategy as a whole by the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, and the start of its implementation, according to the calendar set between Romania and the EU regarding reforms and funding of the Romanian forest sector.

Narrative Description of Project: 

National Forest Monitoring and Assessment of Tanzania was carried out during 2009-2013 with Tanzania Forest Service Agency in collaboration with the Government of Finland and Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations (FAO). The survey included over 32 000 sample plots and millions of data entries.

The ZWBS project carried out a national biomass and socio-economic surveys and forest inventory in Pemba and Unguja islands enhancing the forest resources management in Zanzibar in line with the REDD+ principles. The ZWBS project also mainstreamed relevant national policies to boost the national economy.
